Privacy Policy

Shereko ("we", "us", or "our") is a digital platform that helps event organizers in Tanzania and East Africa manage weddings, harusi, sherehe, and other celebrations. We are based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and operate shereko.com.

From organizers (account holders):

• Phone number — used to log in via WhatsApp OTP
• Name and profile details you choose to provide
• Event details: title, date, venue, description, cover images
• Guest lists you import or add manually (names, phone numbers)
• Payment information processed via PawaPay, Stripe, or other providers

From guests (people invited to events):

• Name and phone number, provided by the event organizer
• RSVP responses (yes/no) and any reservation choices
• Contributions or gifts you send

Automatically collected:

• Basic device and browser information for security and analytics
• WhatsApp message delivery and read receipts (from Meta)

• To create and manage organizer accounts and events
• To send WhatsApp invitations, reminders, and updates on behalf of organizers
• To process payments for ticketing, contributions (michango), and gifts (zawadi)
• To track RSVP responses and event attendance
• To improve the Shereko service and detect fraud or abuse
• To comply with legal obligations

Shereko uses the Meta WhatsApp Business Cloud API to deliver event invitations and updates. When an organizer adds you as a guest and sends an invitation, your phone number is shared with Meta solely to deliver that message. Meta processes this data under its own Privacy Policy.

We only send messages using pre-approved WhatsApp templates and only for the purposes the organizer has set up (invitations, reminders, event updates). We do not use your phone number for marketing outside the event you were invited to.

We share information only in these limited cases:

• With service providers who help us operate Shereko: Meta (WhatsApp delivery), PawaPay and Stripe (payments), Cloudflare (hosting and image storage), Railway (database hosting).
• With event organizers who invited you — they can see your RSVP, contributions, and gift reservations for their event.
• When required by law — to comply with valid legal requests from authorities.

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, ever.

We keep event data for as long as the organizer keeps their account active. Organizers can delete events at any time, which removes guest lists, messages, and RSVP data associated with that event.

Payment records are retained for 7 years to comply with Tanzanian financial regulations.

You have the right to:

• Access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate information
• Request deletion of your data (subject to legal retention requirements)
• Opt out of WhatsApp messages by replying STOP to any message you receive
• Withdraw consent for processing where consent is the legal basis

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), encrypted database connections, scoped API tokens, and access controls. No system is 100% secure, but we work continuously to keep your data safe.

Shereko is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us and we will delete it.

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated via email or in-app notification where appropriate.
